The Perfect Summer Cocktail

Cocktails Featured Recipes

When I think of summer I think of the beach, sunshine, friends, laughter.  To me summer even has a smell.  It’s the sweet fragrance of freshly pressed waffle cones, mixed with tar from the pier and salty sea air.  It transports me back to being 16, spending countless hours swimming in the ocean with friends and it grounds me in the now of doing the same with my children.  Summer is also full of flavor like BBQ, sweet summer fruit, ice cream, and on those extra hot days, cold drinks.

There are so many great drinks, alcoholic & not, that hit the spot just right at the end of a scorching summer day, but I’d like to think of lemonade as the easiest summer drink.  You can make it from scratch or concentrate and you can buy it ready made.  It can also be a great venture for your kid’s first foray into  entrepreneurship.  It was definitely a summer favorite in my childhood, so it’s no wonder I fell in love with the cocktail I’m sharing with you: the French 75.  It is light, bubbly and delicious and if you don’t pay attention, will knock you on your butt!  According to Wikipedia the drink dates back to WWI with the combination of gin and champagne being said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75 canon.

I love this as a Summer evening cocktail but I get overly excited when it’s offered as a brunch option!  I recently had the joy of brunching at Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette in Marina, CA and was thrilled to find the French 75 on their menu.  It paired perfectly with their flakey monkey bread but really shined with the salty, savory flavors of my breakfast sandwich.  Seriously, try it with brunch- you can thank me later!

When I sat down to write this I had added a mocktail version as well.  I had my parents come over & I made the quick version cocktail below and played with turning the French 75 into a non-alcoholic version, but it just didn’t translate.  I was in essence trying to make  French Lemondae (Citron Pressé).  If you need a mocktail version, serve French or sometimes called sparkling, lemonade, it has the same idea of being fresh, light and bubbly without having to fuss of squeezing lemons.  I used a standard champagne flute for my French 75.  I’ve also seen them served in a champagne coupe, martini glass and a collins glass.

Now that you know my favorite Summer cocktail, I want to know what your go to Summer cocktail is.  Let me know in the comments below!
